Robust cattle brought to Deonar slaughter house !
Mumbai : On the occasion of ‘Bakr-Id’ , large number of cattle has been brought for slaughtering to Deonar Abattoir. All the animals are useful for agricultural work; therefore, their killing would amount to breach of law. This abattoir should be urgently inspected and killing of robust animals should be promptly stopped. A letter to the above effect has been sent by Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad (HVP) to the retired Judge and President of Animal Welfare Act Implementation Committee (Committee), Mr. Chandrashekhar Dharmadhikari. While passing verdict on‘Public Interest Litigation (PIL)’ in the year 2005, order was issued by the High Court to set up the said Committee under the Chairmanship of Judge Dharmadhikari. Since then, this Committee is engaged in preventing malpractices taking place at slaughter houses.
It has been stated by Advocate Sanjiv Punalekar of HVP in the letter that ‘It is an offence to kill cows and calves. If a bull is to be killed, it is necessary to get a certificate from a veterinary doctor that it is no longer of use for agricultural work. Few reporters recently visited slaughter house when it was observed that many cows, calves and healthy bulls were there. All of them are going to be slaughtered on the occasion of ‘Bakr-Id’. Proof of the above has been sent to your office in the form of photographs. You can also pay a surprise visit to Deonar Abattoir and punish the offenders.’ HVP members also met BJP-MLA Mr. Mangalprabhat Lodha who too has written to the Committee demanding for immediate action in this serious matter. Adv. Sanjeev Punalekar of HVP has expressed a firm belief in Judge Dharmadhikari that he would certainly take action and punish the guilty.
