Mumbai (Maharashtra): Despite severe water shortage, in the name of saving environment, and at the insistence of Dr. Shubha Raul, the mayor, Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) is firm about the immersion of Sree Ganesha idols in artificial water tanks even this year. (As per the ‘Dharma-shastra’, Ganesha idols should be immersed in flowing water. It is generally observed that the idols immersed in artificial water tanks are later mishandled. There is a severe water shortage in Mumbai. Even then if the Mayor and MMC administration insists on immersion of idols in artificial water tanks, they should remember that they are preventing people from following Dharma! – Editor SP)

In a press conference held recently, Mr. Madhav Sangale, the Additional Commissioner of MMC informed about how the MMC is geared up to handle the Sree Ganehsa festival. He was asked that when there was a water shortage in Mumbai and efforts were being made to convert the sea water into potable water, from where would the MMC get water to fill up artificial water tanks for immersion? Mr. Sangale replied that the water will be brought from the wells through tankers and made available for the artificial water tanks.

HJS opposition continues for immersion of Ganesha idols in artificial water tanks

Immersion of Ganesha idols in artificial water reservoirs is against the science and as per science, it should be done in flowing water (like a river or in sea water). After the idols are immersed in artificial water reservoirs, the remaining parts of the idols are taken out from the water tanks on the following day and there is mishandling of idols. This was brought to light by HJS last year. Presently, there is a water cut of about 15 to 30% in Mumbai. Under the circumstances, HJS has shown its strong opposition for immersion of idols in artificial water tanks. A representation has already been submitted in this connection to the Mayor, Dr. Shubha Raul. A copy of the said representation has also been forwarded to Mr. Uddhav Thackeray, the chief executive of Shiv Sena, Mr. Sanjay Raut, a Shiv Sena leader, Mr. Rahul Shevale, a municipal councilor and through him to Dr. Jayaraj Phatak, the Commissioner of MMC so also to D. Sivanandan, the Police Commissioner of Mumbai.
