Shri Shantadurga Seva Samiti (Cuncolim, Goa), organised a Jalabhishek ceremony to pay homage the 16 chieftains of Cuncolim who staged an uprising on 15th July 1583 against the destruction of temples and religious conversions by the Portuguese. This uprising of the villagers of Cuncolim was the first uprising in Asia against European colonialism. The Government of India has declared this uprising as ‘Goa State National War Memorial Day’. For the last 6 years, Shri Shantadurga Seva Samiti has been organizing jalabhishek and lectures on July 15th with the aim of passing down this history to the next generation.
