171 temples in Andhra Pradesh above Rs 20 lakh income have come under the new tax regime of GST.
There are 23,834 temples in the state, of which 45 temples come under the Rs 1 crore income category, 63 temples up to Rs 25 crore and seven temples with more than Rs 25 crore annual income, including Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the country’s richest.
Even as TTD escapes GST levy, the ingredients that go into making ‘laddus’ such as cashew nut and cow ghee attracts GST of 5% and 12%, respectively.
Rooms with more than Rs 1,000 per day tariff attracts 18% GST, while certain Arjita Sevas are also expected to cost more from Saturday.
“We need to create awareness among TTD staff about the shift to GST, this is new for them,” a senior TTD officer said.
All 21 checkpoints along Andhra Pradesh’s borders, including the famous Ichoda check post, have been shut down forever.

Since most of the Temples in South India provides free food to the pilgrims including Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner as Prasadams the ingredients used for these Prasadams and managed by the Endowment commissions or by the Govt Trusts.These practices are continuing from thousand years as a tradition which should not be stopped.Hence the ingredients so used be exempted from the GST immediately.
