Panaji (Goa): The Supreme court on Tuesday has asked the Chief Secretaries of state Governments including the Goa Government to appear in person before the court and answer as to why they were not able to comply with the courts directives of submitting a comprehensive report on the action taken with reference to the illegal religious structures in the states. The apex court has passed the direction while expressing dissatisfaction for the lack of time-bound action on the issue by the states.
Chief Secretary Sanjay Shrivasta has said that the government has asked for two weeks time to comply with the court directives and to file details of unauthorised structures in public places.
In July 2010, the court had asked the chief secretaries of states to file comprehensive affidavits indicating the number of unauthorised religious structures that have been removed, replaced or regularised in their states. But most state governments had failed to furnish the details within the stipulated time. Irked by this the Supreme Court has asked the Chief Secretaries of the states which have failed to submit the report to appear in person and answer as to why they were not able to comply with the directions of the court.
It may be recalled that the Goa government had identified 800 religious structures erected on government land as illegal. These include churches, temples, ghumtis, crosses etc.
In September 2009, the Supreme court had directed the state governments and the union territories not to permit any construction of temple, mosque, church, gurudwara or any place of worship in public places, including streets and parks.
