Hectic preparations are on to launch the campaign at village-level. The parishad plans to reach out to some two lakh villages, apart from the urban spheres, intending two things: make a bid to transform it into a people’s movement and reach out to the younger generation.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, VHP chief Ashok Singhal said that the parishad seeks to get mandate from all the political parties to pass a legislation in parliament for construction of the temple in Ayodhya.
“If the Shah Bano case was solved only after passing a legislation in parliament, so can be this issue. If the government sincerely wishes to solve the matter, a law has to be enacted in parliament,” said Singhal. “Only 5% Muslims reside in Ayodhya. They should rather support the noble cause than to transform the place into a Mecca.”
The VHP also wants to alter its image in the mind of the young generation, which was born around the time the Babri mosque was demolished in Ayodhya. It estimates that population to be around 10 crore today.
“That generation has grown up with a perception that the VHP is bad,” said Vyankatesh Abdeo, the parishad’s national secretary.
“We want to place facts before them and change their perception.”
More than five lakh copies of a booklet titled Ha Ghya Purava (Here are the facts) in Marathi and regional language versions about the events leading up to the Babri masjid demolition and the history of the vexed issue, as written by the VHP, are being printed to be distributed among the common masses.
What’s more, the young volunteers of the VHP are using the social networking sites and online tools to mass-circulate the message among the generation-X.
Mass committees are currently in the stage of formation. About a hundred volunteers (basically leaders from different communities and linguistic background) would make a regional (Pranth) committee; 50-70 members’ a district-level committee; then a sub-sector committee of about 30 volunteers and about ten members are being roped in to form a village-committee, VHP sources informed DNA.
The campaign, VHP sources say, is the beginning of an agitation that the parivar wants to take to its logical end. Talking about the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast, Sehgal said the Congress is making the task easier for the VHP. “By victimising Sadhvi Pragya, Congress is boosting the formation of a prominent leader,” he said. The Sadhvi is the prime accused in the Malegaon blast case.
