The organizers of Frankfurt Book fair render apology for desecrated picture of Lord Ganesh

Mumbai: Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) learnt about the desecrated picture of Lord Ganesh displayed by the organizers of ‘Frankfurt Book Fair 2006’ held in Germany during 4th to 8th October 2006. HJS immediately wrote to the Director, ‘National Book Trust India’, New Delhi registering protest against such mockery of Lord Ganesh and it also started an ‘Online’ protest drive on its website https://www.hindujagruti.org/. The organizers of the book fair rendered their apology and issued an apology letter signed by the Director, International Section of ‘Frankfurt Book Fair’; but HJS will continue its fight till the picture is withdrawn from the Fair and the organizers render a public apology.

In this Book Fair, Lord Ganesh is shown standing on a computer’s keyboard with a laptop, mobile phone, floppy, VCD etc. in the hands along with an earphone. In this context, HJS started its protest campaign on its website link https://www.hindujagruti.org/denigration/index.php?id=11 It was informed to HJS that earlier such Book fairs were held at Delhi and Germany which were managed by Billevue’ company and sponsored by Germany’s autonomous Federal Foreign Office. The National Book Trust that has been given the responsibility of management of the Fair had no hand in display of Lord Ganesh in this manner. HJS has however, demanded that the controversial picture should be removed and their apology letter should be displayed in its place. The company should inform in an open letter to the patrons and media persons that they do not promote mockery of Hindu deities (or even other religion’s revered persons/things). HJS has asked for contact no. of the concerned who have provided the picture so that they could make a try to withdraw the picture from the Fair.

Apology Letter

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

With regards to your protests against the billboard with the painting of Lord Ganesh which is part of an exhibition shown at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Germany, in October 2006 please note that this exhibition has already been shown in Delhi, India, as well as on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany, in 2005. It was curated by the agency Bellevue and supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. National Book Trust, the agency entrusted to organise the Guest of Honour Presentation at the Frankfurt Book Fair, was not involved at all.

All institutions are very sorry if the religious sentiments of the Hindus were completely unintentionally hurt through this piece of art which is part of the exhibition.

We will be happy to answer any other inquiry.

With our very best wishes
