Panvel (Maharashtra): ‘M/S Jaikishan Rice Mill’ had printed picture of Srikrushna on the plastic bags packing rice grains. This was noticed by Miss Rukmini Patil of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS). She informed Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the district-coordinator of HJS for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad about it. Mr. Vatkar called up the owner of the Mill, Mr. Shantilal Patel and enlightened him about the denigration taking place through using the picture so also importance of the Deity, activities of HJS etc. He also told that under the Indian Trademarks Act, 1999, use of Deities’ pictures on any product is punishable.

Mr. Patel immediately apologized and said, “We had not thought about denigration of Deity in such manner. This is the first time that we have been told about it. Henceforth, we will not have bags with picture of Deity. There are, however, 1500 bags remaining from the earlier stock. Allow us to use these bags.” Mr. Vatkar said, “Use of these bags should be stopped immediately paying respect to the religious sentiments of Hindus. If legal action is taken, legal expenses will be much more than printing of 1500 bags. Besides, you will be committing a sin.” On hearing this, Mr. Patel said, “Use of the bags will be stopped immediately.” An appeal has been made on behalf of HJS to all Hindus that if they notice pictures of Deities on bags in this manner, they can promptly enlighten the shopkeeper or manufacturer about the denigration and make him stop use or sale of such bags.
