Dissent: A large number of people opposing the demolition of the Sri Balamuri Ganesha temple in Chickballapur on Saturday

Chickballapur (Karnataka):
In accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines, the Chickballapur district administration on Saturday launched a drive to demolish ‘illegal’ religious structures hindering road traffic in Chickballapur town.

Nearly a dozen religious structures were demolished using earth movers on National Highway No. 7, which passes through the town.

Assistant Commissioner P. Vasanth Kumar supervised the operations. Security was tightened and additional forces were deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people gathered near the Sri Balamuri Ganesha temple, which also finds a place in the list of illegal shrines, and requested the officials not to raze the temple.

Although a ‘nagarakatte’ next to the temple was demolished, the temple itself was spared for the time being.

It is said that senior officials in the district administration were divided over the move to demolish three major temples, including the Sri Balamuri Ganesha Temple.

According to official sources, 56 religious structures have been identified to be demolished in Chickballapur town and the drive would continue for another few days.
