Mysore (Karnataka): The District Administration, unleashing its drive to demolish illegally constructed places of worship in rural areas, today razed to ground two temples, including one under construction at Yelwal. The drive comes in the wake of a Supreme Court directive to evict illegal structures on public places.

The three-hour demolition drive began at 6 am under the supervision of Tahasildar Manjunath Swamy.

A Chamundeshwari Temple near the Government Hospital, learnt to be built illegally, was the first to be razed followed by another similar temple under construction on the adjacent road. Both temples are said to be constructed by the villagers of the region.

There was no resistance from the villagers as they were aware of the move.

Two excavators and about 100 gangmen from the local Panchayat were deployed for the operation.

Mysore Rural Police Inspector Gopalakrishna provided security cover with over 200 personnel.

The district administration also had plans to bring down a Ganapathi Temple on the main road but was put-off as few shops were found abutting it. Eviction notices were served to those shopkeepers to facilitate the demolition process.
