Mulki (Karnataka): On 21st December 2010, HJS held a meeting of all the people associated with the Temples and other places of worship, temple Hundis, welcome arches of Mulki that have been declared as illegal structures. Trustees and representatives of over 75 places of worship and Mr. Mohan Gowda (Spokesperson, HJS), Mr. Ram Bhat (Retired Deputy Tahsildar, Sulya) and Mr. Ramesh Kukkundoor (HJS) took part in the meeting held at the Jarandaya Temple premises in Haleyangadi.

Mrs. Sangeeta Prabhu (Sanatan Sanstha) invoked Lord Ganapati’s blessings on the meeting. Introducing the topic of discussion, Mr. Mohan Gowda said that ‘Temples and other places of worship are the backbone of Hindu Dharma. Our ancestors fought to safeguard them from the Moghuls and the Portuguese, and today it is necessary that we raise a voice against the Government’s decision of labelling these Temples as illegal structures’. He informed everyone of the Samiti’s success in Maharashtra in safeguarding Temples; and how to counter the two pronged attack of labelling certain places of worship as illegal and bringing the rest under the Muzrai department (Governmental control). He said that corruption is the essence of every Government and on the Karnataka Government’s decision to take over the Temples ‘that no Government can be expected to work positively for the temples’.

Mr. Dugganna Samant (Moktesar (Trustee), Sri Durgaparameshwari temple, Bappanadu Mulki) was of the opinion that ‘the Government’s orders are not mere rules thrust upon a religion, but are grave wounds inflicted on Hindus. Problems may not have risen if the Karnataka Government had not been bent on implementing the Supreme Court’s rulings on illegal structures of worship within a set date. The other states’ governments chose not to set a fixed date to do so’. He also said that ‘the people’s mandate always is victorious, and that it is necessary to remember that it was such a mandate that got Bharat independence (from the British). It is necessary to respect the Government’s orders, but if they are against the best interests of the citizens we have to reconsider them and seek appropriate solutions. HJS is working toward educating people on the ground realities of the Court’s ruling and presenting their feelings to the Judiciary. So, this Samiti has my complete support’. He expressed regret that the Government’s order may result in the loss of Bappanadu temple’s Hundi (which fetches lakhs of Rupees as an income to the Temple) and the majestic welcome arch.

Mr. Ram Bhat gave legal advice to the trustees present and  Mr. Ramesh Kukkundoor conducted the program.
