HJS members distributing pamphlets regarding ‘Makar Sankranti’ |
Mumbai: Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) held lectures on the topic of ‘Science behind celebrating ‘Makar-sankranti’ and importance of haldi-kumkum functions’ at Santaji Seva Mandal, Teli Sanstha, Byculla, BPT Complex, Wadala, Shiv Sena Office – Vasai (East) and Anandnagar – Vasai (West). More than 550 women attended the lectures held at 6 places. The topic was presented by Mrs. Vijaya Shah at Byculla, Mrs. Meena Mahadik and Mrs. Veena Mhatre at Wadala, Mrs. Mangala Raut, Miss Meenal Bendre and Miss Shraddha Satam at Vasai. These HJS members explained the significance of using ‘til (sesame)’ during ‘Sankranti’, importance of giving ‘sattvik vaan (offerings)’, ‘Panchopchar’ performed in ‘Haldi-kumkum’ program etc.
An appeal was made to celebrate our religious festivals from the view-point of an opportunity to follow ‘Dharmacharan’ and God realization rather than celebrating them with a narrow concept of getting certain benefit or just as a ritual.
Highlights
1. Women demanded to start ‘Dharmashikshan’ classes at Wadala after listening to the lecture
2. Vice President, Mrs. Sharda Kirave of Santaji Seva Mandal felicitated Mrs. Vijay Shah after her lecture at Byculla

HJS members were explaining importance of applying ‘kumkum’ as per Hindu- shastra to the people. Hundreds of people gave good response to this drive. The child-seekers of Sanatan were exchanging greetings on the occasion wearing traditional clothes and offering ‘tilgul’. Some devout Hindus attending ‘Dharmashikshan’ classes of HJS were also present. Similar drive was undertaken at Khanda Colony and Shiva Complex.
Responses from people
1. Such drive should be undertaken everywhere. We Hindus have forgotten our identity. You created awareness on the occasion of this holy festival. This was the response given by many people to HJS members.
2. Mr. Sandip Jadhav – In every temple, men should be applied ‘Tilaa’ on the respective day of that Deity in a week so that they will start applying ‘tilaa’ regularly. I will also participate in such drive.
3. Mrs. Sangita Chougule – I came to know the significance of ‘kumkum’ on the day of ‘Makar-sankranti’. It gives ‘sattvikata’ and peace of mind.
