National Flags made of plastic and paper are commonly used on Republic Day. These flags are later found strewn all over the roads and even in gutters. This causes insult of National Flags. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had, therefore, undertaken a campaign to prevent such insult of National Flags through out the State which received encouraging resonse from citizens. It was observed that use of plastic and paper flags was reduced at many places.

Reduction in plastic flags in Thane District

Thane (Maharashtra): HJS undertook a drive on a large scale at Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Murbad, Badlapur in Thane district. As a result, the sale of plastic and paper flags was less compared to last year since the response from people was very good.
In Thane city, people were explained about the insult of flag in Vartaknagar area and handbills were distributed. A representation was submitted to Vinod Lokhande, the Joint Police Commissioner in this regard leading to his holding meetings with local shopkeepers to explain the topic. Members of HJS took a round in the area and found that per centage of paper and plastic flags on sale, was less.

Mr. Sudarshan Joshi and Mrs. Rashmi Prabhu, on behalf of HJS, collected stickers, wrist-bands, balloons etc. from various places with the help of the police. The drive strongly undertaken by HJS at Kalyan resulted in reduction in sale of paper and plastic flags whereas at Murbad, all shopkeepers avoided sale of flags. Only one shopkeeper was selling the flags. As HJS members met the shopkeeper and enlightened him in the matter, he closed down his shop. The representation given in Bajarpeth Police Station was circulated among schools along with a copy of the relevant Government order. The schools read out the circular to students and advised them against buying flags. This resulted in stopping the sale of flags at many places.

Lectures on ‘Present condition of Nation and Dharma’ were held at different places in Diva and Dombivali. In a program held in Ramnagar colony on behalf of Mr. Janardan Kulkarni, ‘puja’ of Bharatmata was performed when Mr. Prasad Vadake of HJS presented the topic. Captain Vinaykumar Sachan was paid homage on behalf of HJS. Mr. Ajay Sanbhus of HJS presented the topic in ‘Gramsabha’ at Chaudharpada in Bhiwandi. The program was attended by 250 children and 50 local residents.

There was good response from the people. Many people tried to know more about HJS activities and showed interest in taking part. A box was kept in a shop with a board appealing people to deposit the paper and plastic flags collected by them. A seven year old girl took the handbill to the principal of her school and requested him to read it out to all students.

Snippets: One aged person read the handbill and said that what HJS was doing, was the need of the hour; today, evey parent has to inculcate love and respect among children towards the Nation.
