Bangalore (Karnataka): Dr. V. S. Acharya, Minister for religious endowments has instructed that unauthorized temples, mosques and churches, which do not create any inconvenience to the public interest, should be made authorized.

He was addressing the press conference held on Friday, 18.2.2011 in the office of Legislative Assembly. He said, “As per the order passed by the Supreme Court, all temples etc. constructed prior to December 2009 and declared as unauthorized, should be demolished. The officers subordinate to the District Collector have suddenly issued a notice to those religious centres about their demolition. It was brought to the notice of the High Court by some parties that such notice had created fear.

3 types of processes

A meeting was held in this background with the Home Minister and Law Minister. It was decided that the procedure should be implemented in such manner so that no faction of the society would be hurt.

Under this decision, wherever possible, the temples, mosques and churche, treated as unauthorized, would be first made authorized.

Secondly, where the constructions that are on footpath, in park etc., the matter will be discussed with the concerned persons before shifting them and thirdly, the constructions which are creating obstacles to public or which have no ancient tradition, will be demolished as unavoidable, he clarified. The district Collector and his subordinate officers have issued another circular in this regard. In the districts viz. Gadag, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Bengaluru etc. such problem is more.

Even if the unauthorized temples are constructed after December 2009, attempts will be made to make them authorized after discussing the matter with the local people and the police and it will be seen that temples are not unnecessarily constructed in new areas.

Sikh, Buddhists and Jain temples are governed by Hindu religious Act; but the Government does not interfere in their management. Managing committees will have to be formed as per the respective customs of that religion. The accounts statements are checked for proper management of such institutions.  Even the ‘Mutts’ will have to furnish a copy of accounts to the Income Tax Department. The Government will look after the overall growth of the temples.
