Kerala: Stolen ancient idol of Sri Ganesh seized

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala): The Vellarada police here on Wednesday seized a ‘panchaloha’ idol of Lord Ganesh from the house of a TV mechanic, Johny of Vellarada.

A woman,  Jameela hailing from Wayanad, who allegedly came to sell the idol to Johny was arrested along with Johny during a surprise raid conducted by the Temple Theft Squad led by DySPs, Gopakumar and Radhakrishnan. According to the police, the raid was conducted following a tip off.

A certificate stating that the idol was over 2,900 years old was also recovered from the Johny’s house.However, the police said that the antiquity of the idol could be calculated only after examination by the archeological experts.

According to the experts, the idol portraying Lord Ganesh in a dancing pose and weighing over 2.5kg was of North Indian origin.Jameela had confessed to the police that she was introduced to Johny through a common friend following which the police initiated a probe to find out the other persons involved in the racket. The case is being probed by Vellarada SI Sunil.

Johny and Jameela were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
