Nagar (Maharashtra): The proposed Anti-Superstitions Act being brought up by the Government is actually anti-Hindu and its name is deceptive. There are many provisions in this Act which can restrict Hindus from following ‘Dharmacharan’; therefore, Shiv Sena will strongly oppose this Act in Legislature, assured Mr. Anilbhaiya Rathod, a Shiv Sena MLA in a press conference. Mr. Ramesh Shinde, the spokesperson of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) for the States of Maharashtra and Gujarat was present on the occasion. The press conference was held on 13th April between 12.00 noon and 1.00 p.m. at Nagar Library on Netaji Subhash Road. Representatives of 15 newspapers and news channels attended the press conference.

Govt’s conspiracy to pass the Bill disregarding its promises ! – Mr. Ramesh Shinde, HJS

While explaining the reason for such strong opposition to the proposed Act, Mr. Shinde said, “The Minister for Social Justice Mr. Shivajirao Moghe had given a clear promise on behalf of the Government that the Bill would not be passed without discussing it with Saints, Dharmacharyas, Warakari Sampradaya and HJS; but without discussing it with either of them, the Government is hatching a plot to pass the Bill in the current budgetary session of the Legislative Assembly. HJS will be staging state-wide agitations along with various ‘Sampradaya’ and organizations.”

Regarding the deceptive name of the proposed Act, Mr. Shinde said, “It is claimed that the Act presented under the new deceptive name ‘Maharashtra Narbali ani Jadutona Virodhi Adhiniyam 2011’ will stop ‘narbali (human sacrifice)’; but it is misleading people because the maximum punishment for serious crime like ‘narbali’ is 7 years under this Act whereas as per clause 302 of Indian Penal Code, the punishment is death sentence. How can then such law be claimed as effective? The words like ‘Dharmik kruti’, ‘Dharmik vidhi’, ‘aghouri pratha’, so-called ‘chamatkar’, mantra-tantra, jadutona etc. have not been defined in the Act; therefore, the Act can be misused. Many senior legal experts have opined that under clause 13 of the Act can lead to imposition of restrictions on religious ceremonies. The shortcomings in the law were explained to the Government; still the Government is trying to pass this Act. HJS is therefore, creating awareness among people for opposing this Act.
