High Court expects action based on Archaeological Department

  • Priests and devotees outraged
  • Ban on abhishek (consecration by ritualistic bathing with water, milk etc). against Dharma Shastra
Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra): Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice M.T. Joshi of Mumbai High court Division Bench at Aurangabad (Sambhajinagar) have given a verdict asking the management of Sri Bhavani Devi temple  to act according to the report given by the Central Archaeological Department regarding the wearing of the idol of Sri Bhavani Devi  at Tuljapur due to daily abhishek on it. Therefore there is a possible danger of banning the offering of abhishek to Sri Bhavani Devi, a tradition of hundreds of years. As a result the priests and the devotees are furious about it.

Central Archaeological Department had given its report regarding the ‘Abhishek on the idol’ to the president of Tuljabhavani Sansthan, the Distict Collector. It was mentioned in the report that, ‘If abhishek is continued then wearing of the idol would take place’.  Taking the advantage of the situation the Collector gave orders to stop the abhishek. All the priests in the temple opposed it vehemently. Mr. Sudhir Kadam, priest of the temple had filed a case against the order of the Collector, on 22nd December 2009. The above verdict is regarding the same case.

Priest would oppose the ban on abhishek ! – Tuljabhavani Priests Assembly

Mr. Kishor Gangane, President of Tuljabhavani Priests Assembly said in this regard, “The priests had agreed to act as per the suggestions made by the Archaeological Department. The suggestions include things like, mineral water for abhishek, pure ghee, curds, etc. to be used during abhishek. It also included suggestion like having silver covering over the idol. We were and are going to accept all such suggestions which will not affect the faith of the devotees. But if anyone is taking an extreme step of discontinuing the abhishek then it is wrong. There will be strong opposition from the priests.

Need to consider the viewpoint of  Dharmashastra ! – Mr. Umakant Raninga, Scholar of Dharma Shastra

Great scholar of Temples and Dharma Shastra at Kolhapur, Mr. Umakant Raninga said, “To ban the abhishek when the idol is in good condition, is contrary to Dharma Shastra. There is a mention in the Dharmashastra that, if the idol is wearing then the abhishek should be done on the feet of the idol. Jagdguru Shakaracharya Peeth  had suggested that, if the idol is very old then it can be replaced by another or by installing an Utsav Murti in its place for offering abhishek. So everything should be according to the Dharmashastra rather than the opinion of the Archaeological Department.”
