Panaji (Goa): A majority of parents of students from government primary schools in the state has decided to continue the education of their children in the mother tongue.
Out of 30,000 children in government primary schools, parents of more then 27,000 children have chosen mother tongue as the medium of instruction (MoI), out of which more then 21,000 have opted for Marathi and the remaining 6,000 have chosen Konkani, Urdu, Kannada and Tamil. Parents of 3,000 children have chosen English as the medium of instruction.
The education department compiled a performa of 613 schools in seven talukas-Pernem, Sattari, Bardez, Bicholim, Salcete, Canacona and Sanguem. Parents of 1,846 students from 83 schools in Pernem have decided to continue their children’s education in Marathi and parents of 59 students have decided to shift to the English medium. In Sattari, 2,679 students from 111 schools have opted for Marathi and 44 students have decided to shift to English. In Bardez, 2151 students from 77 schools have opted for Marathi and 243 students have opted for English. In Bicholim, from 90 primary schools, 2,802 students have decided to continue education in Marathi and 45 have decided to shift to English.
In Salcete, 1,328 students have opted for Marathi from 63 schools and 726 students have opted for English. In Cancona, from 71 schools, 1,656 students have opted for Marathi and 27 students have decided to shift to English. In Sanguem, 2,557 students from 118 schools have opted for Marathi and 107 have decided to shift to English. The remaining parents from this taluka have chosen Konkani, Urdu, Tamil and Kannada.
The education department is in the final stage of compiling a performa of Tiswadi, Ponda, Quepem and Mormugao talukas. Sources said that the parents of around 4,000 students from these four talukas have opted for Marathi and parents of around 1,000 students have opted for English, while a few parents have chosen Konkani, Urdu, Tamil and Kannada.
It may be recalled that the DoE had compiled a report based on the proforma submitted by parents of students of 149 government-aided schools. There are 178 government-aided schools in Goa.
The taluka-wise break-up showed that parents of 27,202 students want their children to study in English, 1,887 want their wards to continue in Marathi, and 904 want to stick to Konkani. Goa has 30,084 students in government-aided schools.
