Mumbai : Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) has raised its hand over the Hindu religious places on roads and footpaths just before Ganesha Festival by issuing notices to them. (Why MMC takes action only before Hindu festivals? Will it dare to do this for Muslims and Christians? – Editor SP) Mayor Shraddha Jadhav has expressed strong displeasure against MMC’s action and her fear that the action by MMC when Ganesha Festival is round the corner, might lead to outbreak of sentiments and cause law and order problem.
MMC had taken action against the Hindu religious places 4 months back and it had resulted in strong reactions in the Legislative Assembly session and strong protest by the people. Mayor Mrs. Sharddha Jadhav had visited the Chief Minister Pruthviraj Chavan and brought a stay on the action. Advocate Ashish Shelar, group leader of BJP had made a demand to give protection to religious places constructed before the year 2009; whereas the Government had asked MMC to undertake a survey of religious places and form a policy in this context. MMC has, however, issued notices in last 2-3 days to religious places in its F South ward and some other places nearing footpaths. Ganesha Festival will start from 1st September and preparations to celebrate the festival have also begun. In such situation, if MMC takes action against religious places, it could adversely affect the atmosphere. There is a meeting of MMC tomorrow and its repercussion might be heard in the meeting.
