Panaji (Goa): Gomantak Mandir and Dhaarmik Sanstha Mahasangh (GMDSM) has forwarded a representation to the Tourism Minister, Mr. Nilkanth Halarnkar asking him to guide the tourists to visit a temple in decent attire rather than using short dresses, to advise them to maintain the sanctity of the temple, follow the rules stated by the temple committee, meticulously. GMDSM has expressed its willingness to help the Minister in this regard. GMDSM’s President Sree Chandrakant Pandit and State coordinator Mr. Jayesh Thali meet Tourism Minister recently and handed over a memorandum to him

The Memorandum says that, “The famous Sri Mahalsa Temple at Mardol, Ponda has banned entry to the local as well as foreign tourists using short dresses. They have also led down some restrictions regarding their dresses while entering the temple. Boards have been put up outside the temple explaining the rules to be followed by the tourists. The tourists enter the temple wearing short dresses and their behaviour too is not at all conducive to the holy atmosphere and sanctity of the temple. They wear the garland to be offered around their neck and offer the same to the Deity while paying obeisance to the Deity. They put the holy water (Tirth) offered by the priests again in the pot containing it. The local devotees are totally annoyed at this behaviour of the tourists. Hence the temple committee has taken a decision to ban such tourists. Sri Mahalsa Temple committee is worth praising for taking a step like this to ban such tourists from entering the temple. Temples are not meant for tourists but they are meant for devotees. Devotees visit the temple to get the advantage of the Divine atmosphere in the temple. So it is very appropriate to ban the tourists to maintain the holiness of the temple. The step taken by Sri Mahalsa Temple is worth emulating by all other temples. There is a news that a similar step has been taken by the church at Old Goa. If the tourists are given guidance to that effect then there will be a positive change in their behaviour.” The copies of the said memorandum have been forwarded to the Director of Tourism, Collectors of both districts in Goa.
