Merrillville (USA): More than a year after the Bharatiya Temple of Northwest Indiana was established in Merrillville, construction of a Hindu school of spirituality is planned near the site.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Chinmaya Mission of Northwest Indiana is scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The event will include presentations from children and devotional singing, said Nupur Arora, director of operations at the Indian American Cultural Center.

The school is associated with the Bharatiya Temple and the Indian American Cultural Center, both at 8605 Merrillville Road.

The Chinmaya Mission will be constructed on a lot adjacent to the facilities. The lot was donated to the cultural center last year, Arora said.

Chinmaya Mission classes are now held Sundays at the temple, she said. Life values and virtues are taught during classes. Students also learn about Hindu festivals there, Arora said.

Children aged 3 to 16 attend the classes.

Arora wasn’t certain of the length of construction for the Chinmaya Mission because it is dependent on fundraising for facility. The estimated cost of the building also wasn’t available.

A magic show is scheduled at 5 p.m. Nov. 5 at the cultural center to raise funds for the project, Arora said.
