Dear Madame,
Subject: Request to withdraw M F Husain’s artwork by Arushi Arts at Stainless Gallery New Delhi from 8th August 2011.
This refers to a news article about display of M F Husain’s artwork by Arushi Arts at Stainless Gallery New Delhi here beginning August 8 http://www.thehindu.com/arts/article2324456.ece
We would like to bring to your notice that MF Hussain has hurt the Religious and National sentiments of crores of Hindus and Indians through his blasphemous paintings of Hindu deities and Bharat Mata (Mother India). This has resulted in promoting enmity between different religious groups and disturbing National integrity and harmony. He has been accused of committing offences under section 2 of the prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. The court cases are still pending.
Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is a registered NGO doing social, religious and National welfare work. Devoted Hindus doing voluntary charitable work have formed this Samiti. Samiti is active throughout India and educating people about Dharma in scientific way, campaigning against malpractices done under religious practices and solving problems connected with National, Religious and social field. We strongly object to the exhibition and sale of Serigraphs and glorification of such an ‘Anti – National’ and ‘Anti – Hindu’ M.F.Husain.
In view of the above, various organisations and Indian citizens are not keen on any exhibition, distribution or sale of any of the paintings of M.F. Husain. A long list of such past incidents can be seen on our website at. https://www.hindujagruti.org/activities/campaigns/national/mfhussain-campaign/
(e.g. removal of Husain’s paintings from ABN Amro Bank’s Credit Card, NGO Khushi’s auction of 6 crores of rupees painting, Tao Art Gallery, India International Trade Center (New Delhi) etc.)
In spite of this, if you exhibit or auction M.F. Husain’s paintings, it will amount not only to glorifying an accused person but also further hurting religious sentiments of Hindus and National sentiments of Indians.
Your action of including of M.F.Husain’s prints/paintings cannot be fulfilled at the cost of National Honour and one’s religious beliefs. In fact Husain has also not spared animals as he has depicted his cruelty and perversion towards animals by drawing pictures of sexual union between animals and Hindu Goddess and human beings. E.g. He has drawn a painting showing a bull copulating with Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva watching, another painting shows Hindu Goddess Durgadevi in sexual union with Lion.
We are approaching you to request you to withdraw M.F.Husain’s work from this sale and exhibition and honour the National sentiments of Indians and religious sentiments of Hindus.
Please acknowledge the receipt of this letter and action taken in the matter.
Yours Truly,
S.G.Vatkar

Detailed News about the exhibition published in ‘The Hindu’
This year’s ‘Harvest-2011′, an annual project Arushi Arts has organised for over a decade, has been conceptualised in fond remembrance as the artist, who passed away on June 9 this year in London, had actively collaborated with the gallery in celebrating art.
“For us Husain Sahib was a special artist; our association goes back 20 years. He was a great friend and guide. We have worked with him on two or three projects for our gallery. The entire exhibition has been dedicated to the legendary artist whose popularity cuts across religion, sex and profession,” says Arushi Arts director Payal Kapoor.
“Husain Sahib always used to say that if Indian art is to reach centre stage then it was important that both young and old must move together. He wanted Indian art to go truly global, retain its Indian identity and be recognised as a strong force. This is precisely the reason why we have displayed the works of 74 other artists alongside the paintings by the celebrated artist,” says Payal.
Seasoned art critic Suneet Chopra, who has meticulously selected all the paintings, says at least one of Husain’s extraordinary works figured in each of Arushi Arts’ previous exhibitions. “He in turn made a special work for us. This year, we have the late artist’s work from his famous Horses series and a woman and bull.
‘Four Seasons’ is a concretisation of not only his exquisite brush work, powerful lines and profound sense of colour, but also of his facility with the narrative, his portrayal of the inspiration he drew from the animal form which he later became famous for,” he says.
Although Husain was born into a Muslim family, he lived in the ancient town of Pandharpur, known for its Vishnu temple, where his grandfather made metal lamps. “Husain’s upbringing in a craftsman’s family gave him a deep understanding of Hinduism as a lived religion with its easy-going familiarity with the gods as distinct from the rule-book religiosity of some. The playfulness, familiarity and deeply personal relation with the divine heroes and heroines of epic-based religions permeated his very being, giving his artistic expression the ecstasy of the bhakta or the Sufi,” says Mr. Chopra.
Other artists whose works are featured in the exhibition include F. N. Souza, S. H. Raza, Akbar Padamsee, Krishen Khanna, Jehangir Sabavala, Jogen Choudhary, Anjolie Ela Menon, Arpana Caur and Paresh Maity.
