Young Hindu girls tied rakhis around the wrists of police officers in London (Ontario) town of Canada, celebrating Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan, according to reports.

London Police Services welcomed few dozen members of Hindu community to police headquarters on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, thus recognizing the cultural diversity of the city. As sisters tie a sacramental thread on the wrist of their brothers on Raksha Bandhan, where “Raksha” means “protection” and “Bandhan” means “bond”, it was argued that symbolism of protection could be extended to police officers who protected the community, reports suggest.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, commended the police authorities of this Canadian town for celebrating Raksha Bandhan at police headquarters with area Hindu community and thus honoring the age-old Hindu tradition.

Raksha Bandhan festival, whose legends went as far back as Inder (first among the Vedic deities), was a celebration of sacred bond of love between a brother and a sister, Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, added.

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal.
