Bangalore: No Proposal to Ban ‘Made Snana’ – Dr Acharya

Bangalore (Karnataka) : Amidst the esclating pressure and raging controversy over the continuance of the ritual of Made Made Snana’ prevalent in Lord Subrahmanyeshwara Temple in Subrahmanya during the annual car festival, state muzrai minister Dr. V S Acharya said that there is no immediate proposal to ban this ritual. He made this announcement at the legislative council session on Monday December 12.

“This is a very sensitive and delicate issue. No hurried decision can be taken on this age-old practice. At the same time, I do not support the ritual. The government will try to find a solution after holding discussions with scholars and leaders from the region,” he stated.

The minister dubbed as improper the terming of the performance of this ritual by people by certain sections as stupidity. “It would be wrong to say that. Some persons may find this tradition, which has been handed down since centuries, as inhuman. But we cannot hurt the sentiments of the devotees,” he clarified. He pointed out that the ritual of Made Made Snana had not been started after the BJP government came to power, and that records reveal that the ritual was prevalent even before 1532. The minister said that he is feeling harassed at having to face criticisms relating to the issue, although he had done nothing wrong in this connection.

Opposition leader, Motamma, who termed Made Made Snana ritual as bad and indecent, asked the government not to allow this practice to continue in the guise of faith. She demanded placing a ban on the ritual like the earlier bans brought on the inhuman traditions of ‘Sati’, ‘Bettale Seve’, ‘Devadasi’ and others.

BJP MLC, Kota Srinivas Poojary, said that none of the members are supporting the system, but that the people have been performing this ritual as a service to the deity out of devotion.

In the meanwhile, president of Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum, K S Shivaramu, in a press conference held at Mysore on Monday, warned of organizing a protest Padayatra from Bangalore to Udupi in the first week of January 2012, if the government does not place a ban on this ritual by December 31. He said that Nidumamidi Veerabhadra Chennamalla Swamiji will lead this Padayatra.

Will the Govt. dare to even think of imposing ban on any festivals celebrated by Muslims or Christians; when under the influence of heretics, it is banning customs and traditions of only Hindus?

Subramanyam : In Shri Kukke Subramanyam Temple located in South Canara District, ban, earlier imposed on the traditional act of ‘Maday Maday Snanam’, undertaken to fulfill wishes made by devotees, has been lifted by the Government officials after strong opposition by devout Hindus and local people offering various ‘services (sevas)’ at the temple.

Religious Hindus have different spiritual experiences at the ancient Shri Kukke Subramanyam Temple

Shri Kukke Subramanyam Temple is an ancient famous temple in Sulya taluka. ‘Mujarai Department’ of Karnataka Government (Anti-national and anti-Hindu department that takes over management of Hindu temples, in a way looting them and is spending the money on Christians and Muslims) looks after the management of this rich temple. This is also famous as ‘Naag-sthaan’. Bhagavan Subramanyam is worshipped here along with ‘Vasuki’, the King of serpents. Thousands of devotees have had experiences of getting rid of ‘Naag-dosham’ by performing ‘puja’ in this temple. People come here from far off places to perform this ritualistic worship and other rituals like ‘Sarp-sanskar’, ‘Naag-pratishtha’, Ashlesha sacrifice etc. There is pious River Kumardhara about 1-1/2 kilometers from here.

Many experiences of getting wishes fulfilled on groveling on leaves

From the Hindu calendar month of Margasheersha to the day of ‘Shashthi’, a festival called ‘Champa-shashthee’ is celebrated here with great enthusiasm every year. There is a custom of offering ‘sevas’ by the devotees on the days of ‘Chaturthi, ‘Panchami’ and ‘Shashthi’ when they have bath in the pious River Kumardhara and grovel on the banana leaves in which Brahmins have food;  followed with circumambulating the temple. Then they have bath once again on ‘Darpan Teertha’ and have ‘darshan’ at the temple. In Kannada Language, it is called ‘Maday Maday Snanam’. Devotees irrespective of their caste, creed and Sect etc. offer this ‘service (seva)’ at God’s feet with great devotion.

Strong opposition by devout Hindus and those offering ‘service’, force the officers to lift ban

Those offering ‘service’ and devout Hindus strongly opposed the ban. Activists of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) and Dy. tehsildar of Sulya taluka, Mr. B. Ram Bhat wrote letter to the Government demanding lifting of the ban as it hurt religious sentiments of Hindus. Mr. Bhat asked whether the Government would ban celebration of ‘Urus’ by Muslims if demand for the same was made. The officers then studied the matter and lifted ban on the above festival. Mr. Bhat while talking to the representative of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’ said, “We all devout Hindus have experienced that if people collectively surrender to God, they succeed in their efforts. We all are very grateful to God for this success.” (Hindus should note that all campaigns undertaken by HJS are carried out by surrendering to Saints and God; therefore, they are successful. They should also take part in the activities related to protection of Nation and Dharma with surrender ‘bhav’ and fulfill the purpose of their birth as human. – Editor SP)

‘Maday Maday Snanam’ by Brahmins at Turuvekere

At Shri Beterai Temple in Turuvekere (Tumkur), tradition of ‘Maday Maday Snanam’ has been followed for the past hundreds of years. At Tumkur, the backward community people have food on banana leaves and on the same leaves with leftovers; Brahmins have ‘Maday Maday Snanam’. It is the place known as ‘Shri Vishnu’s pilgrimage place and this tradition is being followed at this temple managed by ‘Mujarai Department’ of the Government, for the past 400 years. (Most of the religious customs and traditions have been started by Sages and Saints. They have made resolves while starting such traditions, accordingly, such tradition is carried on for thousands of years. At one place people from other than Brahmin community, grovel on such leaves and at other place, people from other communities have food on the leaves on which, later, Brahmins grovel; therefore, the accusation made about such tradition being started to insult ‘Dalit’ communities is baseless.( Besides, such ‘snanam’ is not undertaken due to any compulsion; devotees have ‘snanam’ with lot of ‘bhav’ owing to the experiences they have; but  of course, those who are suffering from Hindu-hatred would not like to accept these facts. – Editor SP)

Mangalore (Karnataka) :  Terming those who oppose ‘Made-Made-Snana’ as ‘Hindu-haters’ and ‘ignorant people’, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has urged the Karnataka State government not to ban the controversial ritual at government-run Kukke Subrahmanya Temple in Sullia taluk.

Glorifying the ritual at a press meet here on Friday, Mohan Gowda, Spokesperson, HJS, said that those who offer ‘Made-Made-Snana’ would be protected from diseases and problems. He lamented for intensifying opposition to the ritual.  “A few so called intellectuals and leaders have condemned the historical ‘Made-Made-Snana’ out of their ignorance, and some politicians went on to the extent of comparing it to untouchability and superstition. This is very unfortunate”, he said.

He also expressed unhappy over the Government’s recent proposal to ban the ritual. “With an eye on the vote banks of certain sections, the State government has pledged to impose ban on this glorious tradition of Hindus. Besides, a few people have spread the false notion that diseases like AIDS would spread through rolling on plantain leaves containing leftovers of lunch served to Brahmins”, he said. However, one can realise the importance of ‘Made-Made-Snana’ through Hindu theology, he added.

“In fact all sections of the society have been following this annual ritual out of their own will. By offering ‘Made-Made-Snana’ many forms of skin diseases, marriage problems, offspring problems and Serpent curse will be eradicated”, he said.He further stated that this ritual is an inseparable part of Hindu belief.
