Prithvi Suicide Case – Chargesheet Soon against Accused, Says SP
Udupi: Speaking to mediapersons here, district’s superintendent of police Dr Y S Ravikumar said that in the matter of the suicide case of Prithvi, an athlete and student of SMS College, Brahmavar, enquiries had revealed that Misban was mainly responsible for her desperate step and that a chargesheet would soon be filed against him.
The SP revealed that the investigation into the circumstances that led to her death had been completed. There were proofs available to his persistent demands for intimacy and physical favours. Distressed by it, she is believed to have committed suicide.
Dr Ravikumar also said that inquiries had been made with her physical education instructors, coaches, college management and hostel supervisor and it was proved that there was no harassment from them. The entries in her diary and the details of the calls Misbah had made to Prithvi on the day of her suicide had proved the mental torture he gave her, which drove her to suicide, he said.

Team Mangalorean contacted all sides connected to the case. It is reliably learnt that Misban, who was acquainted with the deceased girl, has been taken into custody, based on a few diary notes made by her before her death. He reportedly used to frequent the playground where she practised and got friendly with her.
He is also said to have showered her with expensive gifts including a mobile phone. Several calls made to and from the mobile between them are on record. He has also visited the girl’s house, according to informed sources.
Brahmavar circle police inspector Krishnamurthy told our team that the police had recovered a diary maintained by Prithvi, which mentions that Misban kept pestering her and sought her love. The police suspect that this may have something to do with her drastic step.
On interrogation, Misban has confessed that they were in love for about a year and a half. To get more details about this, the police intend to seek vital information from the hostel warden, students, sports coaches and college officials.
The police informed Team Mangalorean that Misban was produced in court and has been remanded to judicial custody up to October 10. On the other hand, Prithvi’s uncle Dinesh Poojary says that the love angle may not be the only thing that drove her to the sad decision.
While she was in high school, a local sporting body had ‘adopted’ her in recognition of her achievements and future potential. Assurances had been given to provide her with her all facilities and assistance.
In this backdrop, she was given a seat in SMS College. But the promises were not kept and the girl, for her sporting expenses, had to borrow money from home, where her parents had difficulties of their own. No one else came forward to help her in her sporting pursuits.
Shekhar Poojariy, Prithvi’s father, hails from a poor family, and has been running a petty shop in their native village. Her two siblings too are good in sports. Sister Pavitra studies in VIII Std and brother Pradeep is studying in a college in VV Puram, Bangalore.
What has surprised many is that no one from either the college or the sporting institution that adopted her visited the mortuary or the Manipal hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted and her body lay.
Upset by this, the family members, on their way home to Amparu with her mortal remains, did not allow the principal of the college, lecturers and students to pay their final respects.
Principal Salvadore Noronha told our team that the college had given her all support. Although she was not extremely well in studies, she was good to everyone and did very well in sports. The college management and the staff had treated her well, he asserted.
The bright career of a girl, who would have gone to the international level, has sadly come to an abrupt end. However, this episode has brought to the fore the need to train today’s children in crisis management.
Even those having attained big-time achievements may crumble under stress. It is not just the physical training, but also the moral and psychological fibre that has to be taken care of.
The public in general feel that to ensure such incidents do not recur, an impartial inquiry should be held.
Protest and condolence
At a public meeting held near the Brahmavar bus stand on Thursday, district BJP, Billava youth organization and the public joined in demanding a thorough inquiry into the case and to offer their condolences to the family.
Rural BJP president Ratnakar Shetty, former BJP president Jnana Vasanta Shetty and others spoke on the occasion. Ullas Nayak paid tributes to the deceased athlete.
