Mumbai : Shri Ganesha idols made from Plaster of Paris (PoP) are installed by public festival committees which cause pollution on immersion in rivers, lakes and sea water. This year, the Government will try to send Shri Ganesha idols made only from clay all over the State so as to curb pollution. The above information was given by Mr. Sanjay Deotale, the Environment Minister in a meeting held in ‘Mantralaya’.
This was the first meeting held in connection with this year’s Ganesha Festival under the chairmanship of Minister Deotale. The meeting was attended by Mr. Naresh Dahibavkar, the President of Mumbai suburban public Ganesha festival committees, Mr. Gajanan Tondvalkar, the President of Sculptor’s organisation, Dr. Uday Dhuri, the spokesperson of Shri Ganesha Kala Kendra as also Mr. Sanjay Bhuskute, the public relations officer of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
Mr. Deotale said, “It is the wish of the State Government to celebrate this year’s Ganesha Festival maintaining its sanctity. We will try to create awareness among Shri Ganesha devotees, sculptors and office bearers of Ganesha Festival Committees.” Mr. Bhuskute said, “The State Government is making an appeal to all Ganesha-devotees to install idols made of clay so that the festival would be held in environment-friendly atmosphere. The State Government has been taking orders for idols of Shri Ganesha made of clay and 3500 devotees have so far registered their order for clay idol. This number is likely to cross 50,000.”
Govt. invites Shri Ganesha Kala Kendra to make clay idols !
The Government has invited Shri Ganesha Kala Kendra to fulfill its wish as declared above. Dr. Uday Dhuri, the spokesperson of Shri Ganesha Kala Kendra (SGKK) said in the meeting, “SGKK has been distributing clay idols for the past 5 years and every year, the demand is growing. This year, we have set our goal to make 30,000 clay idols. As per the requirement of the Government, we will make available ‘sattvik’ idols made of clay which will help in preserving the environment. Making of such Shri Ganesha idols will be soon started in workshops all over the State.”
