Hyderabad : “How can they separate a child from her mother just because she happens to be above 18 years? I heard that they are going to shift her to someundisclosed location after two years, in which case we won’t even be able to see her,” says the mother of Laxmi Priya, the 26-year-old who was a software engineer at Infosys in Chennai before she joined the Pentecostal Mission Church there as a full time missionary in July last year.

Laxmi’s parents – her father Vardarajulu is a goldsmith from Secunderabad – approached the State Human Rights Commission on Tuesday alleging that their daughter was brainwashed and forcibly converted by a Christian mission in Chennai and is currently in their custody. Mr Vardarajulu is worried about her health, since he says she has been made to fast and pray for days together.

According to the parents, Laxmi left them all of a sudden following a phone call. Her marriage had been settled at the time. She joined the Pentecostal Mission Church, Tambaram, in Chennai, and hasn’t been allowed to visit her parents. “She said she was baptised by the Pentecostal Mission Church and embraced Christianity of her free will and she insists we don’t intervene and allow her to practice the same,” her father said.

In their petition before the Commission, the parents said: “After perusal of her letters and telephonic conversation, medical experts are saying she is going through serious mental disorder and it would lead to total breakdown if there was no timely medical intervention. Her life would be futile and would be of no use to her, family, or to the mission if she isn’t treated in time.” Her father claims Laxmi is suffering from hallucinations and delusions. “She says she is conversing with Jesus and is married to Christ. I went to her and stayed for four days. We were not allowed private audience with her.”
