Pune (Maharashtra) :  For the past 11 years, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has been undertaking a drive to protect Khadakvasala lake on the days like ‘Dhuli-vandan’ and ‘Rang-panchami’. More than 100 HJS activists prevented pollution of the lake and harm that could have been caused to the environment by forming a protective shield around the water body.

(Congratulations to HJS activists!  If devout from all places undertake such drives, change can be brought about very quickly. – Editor SP) When residents of Pune are already facing problems due to water shortage, youth go to Khadalvasala water lake for bath after celebrating ‘Dhuli-vandan’ and ‘Rang-panchami’ with colours. The water of the lake gets contaminated due to chemical colours. Earlier youth members used to indulge in malpractices like behaving indecently with women, drinking liquor, teasing women, make noise at the place etc. ; but it has been stopped since the past 11 years. Along with HJS, many organizations like Sanatan Sanstha, local residents of Khadakvasala, water irrigation department and Pune rural police took part in the drive. Many residents passing by the lake on the day of ‘Dhuli-vandan’ and ‘Rang-panchami’ told the activists that they were able to get clean water owing to the drive and they were grateful. Some of them, however, tried to argue; but due to the awareness created by HJS activists, they too showed interest in joining HJS drive next year.
