Karnavati (Ahmedabad, Gujarat) : Chief Minister Narendra Modi today stressed on the need to present a true history of India’s freedom struggle before the public.

He said that it is a misfortune of the country that several great men were victim of political untouchability, negative mentality and deliberately distorting history by the then rulers. History has been unfair in true evaluation such leaders as they were subjected to controversies weaved around them. Veer Savarkar was one of them, who had a unique and close relationship with Gujarat.
Mr. Modi was speaking at a function organized by Mumbai-based Savarkar Darshan Pratishtahan and Bharatiya Vichar Manch of Gujarat to mark 129th birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar the release of Gujarati version of the film on Veer Savarkar. It was subsequently translated in 14 languages.

Mr. Modi said that he had the privilege of watching the premier show of Veer Savarkar’s film first made in Hindi in 2001 produced by late Sudhir Fadke. Here is a person who tried to free India from social untouchability but got trapped in political untouchability. His family also suffered a lot.
Mr. Modi felt that this film of Veer Savarkar and Vivekanand Memorial at Kanya Kumari would continue to inspire India’s new generation for long time to come. He said there are two types of people responsible for poor image of India abroad. The first type still suffers from the mentality of slavery and the second type considers India as a piece of land.
India’s history is a witness that there was no communal rivalry between Hindus and Muslims before 1857.
He recalled that India’s first freedom struggle in 1857 is also considered to be sepoy mutiny by leaders of even post-Independence India. Veer Savarkar not only fought the tyranny of the British rulers but inspired Indians. In 1938 Sir Sayaji Gaekwad of Baroda sitting in a car listened to Veer Savarkar’s speech and was greatly impressed. India’s history is a witness that there was no communal rivalry between Hindus and Muslims before 1857.
Savarkar Darshan Pratishthan’s President Prof Bal Apte of said that Veer Savarkar spent 12 years in the Andamans jail, known as black or dark cells, and had fought for India’s unity and social equanimity. He was as dear to Maharashtra as Gujarat.
Pratishthan’s Vice-President Dada Idotare gave details about the film. The function started with welcome speech by Mr. Ravindra Sathe.
Gujarat’s Ministers and Ahmedabad Mayor Asit Vora, among others, were also present at the function.
