Denigration of ‘Om’ by TOI

Mumbai: In the special supplementary issue called ‘Time Life’ printed with the issue of Times of India dated 30th December, a picture of a non-Indian model has been published. The model is wearing a weird kind of dress that has ‘Om’ printed on it. ‘Om’ is a ‘mantra’/ holy symbol’ worshipped by thousands of Hindus. There is not only ‘Om’ but also a lotus which is the ‘asana (seat)’ of goddess Lakshmi and considered as a holy flower has also been printed along with a ‘skull and two bones (a danger sign)’. This dress looks very odd.

The article along with which the controversial picture has been published is on ‘Raway’ a type of dance program organized at night and has become a craze among youth today. In this program, along with dancing and singing, fashion is also given equal importance. Attractive costumes are supposed to be of importance in such programs. The program is becoming very popular as part of ‘night culture’ among today’s youth. Picture of a model wearing such dress in the program is giving out wrong signals to youth that they can denigrate things revered by Hindus.
