Chennai : Dealing a body blow to the prosecution’s case against the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswathi, in the Radhakrishnan assault case, an approver, Ravi Subramaniam, turned hostile on Tuesday.

When the trial continued before additional sessions judge K Dakshinamoorthy, Subramaniam claimed that his confession to the crime was not voluntary and that he did not turn an approver on his own volition. He claimed that the then deputy superintendent of police probing the case had brought a prepared statement and that he was made to sign the papers under coercion and intimidation.

Contradicting his reported averments recorded by a magistrate, Ravi Subramaniam told the court on Tuesday that he was not aware of any instruction being given by the acharya to harm Sankararaman, who was murdered in 2004, or Radhakrishnan. He also expressed ignorance about the acharya’s personal habits.

Requesting the court to treat Subramaniam as a hostile witness, special public prosecutor Vijayaraj questioned as to why the former did not complain of threat and intimidation at the earliest opportunity available to him. Subramanian is the second witness to be examined in the case. The examination of the assault victim, Radhakrishnan, has been completed. The matter has been adjourned till July 13.
