Suppression by police: Hundreds of activists arrested

Mumbai : The cows and other animals of cow’s lineage, held in reverence by crores of Hindus, are killed indiscriminately in the Muslim dominant areas on the occasion of ‘Bakr-Id’ every year. In order to protest against such ‘Cow slaughter’ during the ‘Bakr-Id’ falling on 26th October this year, a ‘warning’ procession was taken out in various parts of Mumbai by various devout Hindu organisations such as Bajarang Dal, Vishva Hindu Parishad, Govansha Rakshan Sanvardhan Parishad, Gopremi Sangathana along with ‘Ahinsa Sena’ of devout Jains. Nearly 800 people participated in this procession.

Even though, an intimation about this procession was given to Police authorities well in advance, police refused to grant permission to the procession in order to appease the Muslims and tried to disrupt the procession by arresting several activists since yesterday morning.

A lawful intimation about the proposed procession was given to Police authorities by the devout Hindu organisation. By taking the disadvantage of this intimation, police arrested nearly 300 activists in the various parts of Mumbai including Goregaon, Sion, Matunga, Borivali, Kandivali, Ghatkopar, Mankhurd, Bhayakhala etc. On casting aside such suppressive tactics of police, 250 activists of devout Hindu organisations met in Azad Maidan, which reverberated with the intense slogan shouting by the activists. The devout Hindu activists warned Police authorities that they will resort to ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation if the arrested activists were not released forthwith. When the Police authorities noticed that the activists will not be cowed down due to threats of actions against activists, they backed down and abandoned the idea of initiating action against the participants in the procession.

A delegation led by Mr. Umesh Rane, Konkan regional convener of Bajarang Dal and consisting of Mr. Lakshminarayan Chandak, Mr. Umesh Gayakvad met Mr. sadanand Date, Assistant Police Commissioner of Mumbai and submitted a detailed memorandum. Mr. Date promised to take the matter seriously and agreed to take necessary precautions to prevent the killing of cows and other animals of cow’s lineage on ‘Bakr-Id’. However, Mr. Rane of Bajanag Dal warned him at the same instant that if police fail to keep their promise, the activists will stop the ‘Cow slaughter’ and protect the cows in the ‘suitable’ manner.
