New visuals of Shivling inside Gyanvapi compound surface; lotus, Trishul and Swastik motifs found engraved on walls

Varanasi: As the row over Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque continues, footage from the recently concluded videographic survey appears to confirm the presence of Hindu motifs and even a shivling within the premises. The district court hearing the case had today cleared the way for 27 petitioners to obtain the commission report, photographs and video footage from the survey.

The footage had been handed over after a declaration was taken from those eligible for copies, to ensure that they are not leaked. No gag order had however been enforced on the media. Those who had filed applications seeking access to the data also paid Rs 2,100 to get the copies.

The visuals accessed by Times Now show that the Nandi is in a direction directly facing the wuzukhana – a small reservoir used by Muslim devotees to perform ritual ablutions before offering the namaz. According to the report filed by Special Advocate Commissioner Vishal Singh, a black stone had emerged when the wuzukhana was drained.

As the report put it, the draining of the wuzukhana had led to the emergence of a structure that ‘very clearly resembles what a shivling would look like. There is however a different stone (with separate colour and texture) that has been put on top and the structure has five divisions in it. It also has a hole which is half an inch wide and 69 cm deep. The structure also does not have an inlet or outlet for plumbing.

While the Hindu side claims that a Shivling has been found inside the mosque premises, the Muslim side insists that this is in actuality a fountain. The new footage however indicates that this structure bears several differences in colour and texture – with a black base and a white top. The visuals of the purported shivling also bear some similarities to other jyotirlingas.

It is pertinent to note here that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had claimed earlier this month that the Hindu side would be able to prove that the structure within the Gyanvapi premises is one of the 12 jyotirlingas.

Corroborating earlier claims made by those who had accompanied the video team, the footage also shows Hindu motifs, including a lotus, Trishul and a Swastik symbol.
