Mumbai: There was tension in Mumbai as Shiv Sena had opposed celebration of Valentine Day. There was strict vigilance by the police at main colleges in the city and near sea-beaches. Thus, in a way, police helped celebrations of Valentine Day by providing protection to couples. At one of the Law Colleges, a special entertainment program was organized on the occasion. Students of the college had met the Police Commissioner and sought protection to avoid any kind of opposition and disturbance during the entertainment program.
Similarly, other main colleges in the city were also provided protection by the police. Even then, Shiv Sena party members held demonstrations in some parts of the city. Shiv Sena opposed Valentine Day celebrations in all parts of the State. Therefore, students were allowed in the college premises only with their identity cards. At Nanded, Shiv sainiks burnt special gift items related to Valentine Day. At Nagpur, a rally was organized to create awareness among masses whereas in Solapur, the couples were garlanded and enlightened about the issue. On the contrary, at Aurangabad, the Youth Congress members were visiting colleges and exchanging greetings for the Valentine day.
