Pune: A press conference was held by ‘Committee for preservation of freedom of expression’ to protest against a ban imposed by the State Government of Gujarat on a movie titled ‘Parzania’. Dr. Shreeram Lagu, a senior artiste was asked whether he would oppose the objectionable paintings by anti-Hindu painter MF Hussain, he replied that if someone did not agree with what controversial Hussain draws, he should protest; but it would be wrong to demand ban on all of his drawings. A few years back, Dr. Lagu was also caught in controversy because of his remark ‘God should be retired’ and he was criticized by everyone.
He said further that there could be difference of opinions about Hussain’s paintings; but it should be restricted to discussions level. If I don’t like something, so I damage that thing or put a ban as was done during Hitler’s regime, is a totally wrong attitude. When there is a Censor Board, why anyone other than the Board should put a ban on films. He also said that the media are responsible for the existing situation. ‘Parallel’ censorship should be stopped.
