Indian Science of Navigation
Till 17th century, ships weighing upto 1500 tonnes known as ‘Godha’, used to be built in India. There was one ship named ‘Darya Daulat’ in East India Company which was built in India. For 87 years, that ship required no repairs. The British, however, could not stand the knowledge possessed by India in ship-building and imposed restrictions; slowly destroying the knowledge.
All names and verbs used in science of navigation, were available in Indian languages. Not only this science; but all branches of science were developed in India and Indian words related to them, were only in use. Nowadays, however, no Indian word is used in any branch of science. There were Marathi words available for everything used in carpentry. Indian business and trade was spread till ‘Java-Sumatra i.e. today’s Indonesia using sea route. We should realize that if one has to go such far using sea-way, how much developed must be science of navigation including finding out directions, time etc. One therefore, needs to think that if there was opposition to science, would the culture and Sanatan Hindu Dharma have progressed to this level?
