Court refuses to stay Sethu project

Chennai: Even as a Ramanathapuram sub court removed a roadblock by way of a petition seeking to stay the execution of the Rs 2,400-cr Sethusamudram project off Rameshwaram, dredging works that had come to a standstill in mid-January after the driller broke is yet to resume.

A petition by Hindu religious leader Swami Omkarananda of Sri Chidbhavananda Ashram at Vedapuri in Theni and D Kuppuramu, a panchayat president, sought to prevent the destruction of what they claim is a bridge built by Lord Rama across the Palk Straits to Lanka as described in the Ramayana. They said it was a holy site with an archaeological significance.

On Friday, Civil Judge S Mohammed Abdahir dismissed the petition after government pleader K Thangaraj submitted there was no evidence to prove there was an ancient bridge at the site.
