Hindus want the Race Relations Commissioner to look into a cartoon of the goddess Kali which appeared in the Herald newspaper, saying it was insensitive.

US Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has asked the New Zealand Herald’s Editor-in-Chief, and parent company APN News and Media, to apologise.

The picture of Kali appeared last month and showed her holding a packet of cigarettes, legal highs and solvents.

It ran alongside an opinion piece about the challenges dairy owners face trying to police the sale of those products.

It has now been pulled from the Herald’s website.

Zed is urging Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy and New Zealand Press Council Chairman Sir John Hansen to look into the issue.
