Panaji: Missionary activities on conversions to Christianity, either by hook or by crook, have been going on all over India; the State of Goa is no exception. There has been an increase in the number of conversions in Mhapsa. Missionaries are using different ways to allure people and this has created disturbance amongst Hindus. It is also leading to law and order problems. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has therefore, demanded that the State Government should control such conversions.
In a press conference in Panaji, Shri. Jayesh Thali, a spokesperson of HJS said that the missionary organization, ‘Believers’, is behind such conversions. Last year, the same organization was to conduct a program at Mhapsa; but due to strong opposition from the locals, the administration had to cancel it in view of law and order situation. Thereafter, in August 2006, another program to convert Hindus was organized by ‘Believers’ at Mhapsa Residency, called "Encounter with holy spirit- Miracle service with Fr. Shekhar Kalyanpur" about which Hindus lodged a complaint with the police and condemned the holding of the program. The motive of the ‘Believers’ group is clear and the local residents have been unhappy about the developments.
In this context, some Hindus met the leader of opposition in the State Legislative Assembly, as also the State Law Minister. In the meeting of Mokshdhaam Crematorium, a demand was also made to pass a suitable Act to control conversions.
