Success of HJS legal fight !

New Delhi : Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had filed PIL demanding setting up of independent machinery to keep control over news telecast by media. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to ‘Press Council of India’ during hearing of the said litigation.

Few media have been involved in publishing wrong information, running ‘Media Trial (to run parallel Court)’, deliberate defamation of persons, showing indecent scenes and pictures etc. thus resorting to wrong practices. There is no machinery to keep control over such kind of news published by media; therefore, those who are being discriminated; do not get justice. The Supreme Court should intervene, was the demand made by HJS through the PIL. The Bench of Chief Justice Sadashivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi have issued notices to Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Law Ministry to obtain their  views.

Important points of PIL filed by HJS

  1. Nowadays, there is system of ‘paid news (give money to publish news)’ which is very dangerous.
  2. It is very unfortunate that media declares a person as criminal through ‘Media Trial’ when police investigations are going on or verdict of Court is yet to be declared.
  3. The present system of ‘Self Regulatory Mechanism (Whatever we do is right)’ is very inadequate.
  4. The present ‘Cable and Television networking Act’ is inadequate and very old. There is need to amend this Act so as to have control over media.
  5. Supreme Court should set guiding principles for the same and till such process is complete or guiding principles are not implemented, a high-level committee should be formed to dispose of complaints lodged against media.
