Mumbai : More than 800 news channels known as medium of fastest dissemination are operating in India today. On one hand, news channels are creating awareness amongst people; few wrong tendencies have entered this field; therefore, trustworthiness of this field is adversely affected. The fourth pillar of democracy is collapsing under methods used for increasing ‘TRP’, or ‘Media Trial’ conducted by giving money, propagation of vulgarity, impetuous broadcasting of news that can help anti-national elements and create problem for Government machinery etc. Therefore, with the noble intention of strengthening of such fourth pillar of democracy, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) has demanded in Supreme Court for setting up of independent machinery to control over news published by channels. The Court has issued notices to the Central Government and ‘Press Council of India’ seeking their true opinion considering the seriousness of the issue. It is success of legal fight given by HJS and it will be followed up till the demand is accepted. Shri. Ramesh Shinde, the national spokesperson of HJS gave the above information through a press release.

It has been stated in the press release that accusations made against Shankaracharya Swami Jayendra Saraswati of ‘Kanchi Kamkoti Peetha’, Swami Nityanand have been proved to be wrong; but their defamation made through channels is irreparable. Even in case of Sant-Shri. Asaramji Bapu, few channels have been acting in such haste. Many cases in this context have been received by HJS. After studying the cases, it was noticed that all media are under control of big industry groups and political leaders and there is no machinery to control over them; therefore, news are disseminated taking into account the taste of viewers and the finances involved.

The existing ‘Cable and Television Networking Act’ to keep control over channels is very old and inadequate. Action taken by ‘News Broadcasters Standard Authority’, the self-declared arbitrator is very sketchy. As a result, there is no provision to get relief by approaching anyone against injustice done by channels. HJS demanded intervention of Supreme Court by for having control over the channels and stop violation of human rights by such bullying channels who feel that ‘whatever they do is right’. The Court has taken note of HJS demand made through the petition. Considering editors like Tarun Tejpal accused with raping and media groups that take ‘package’ for not broadcasting news, the need for control over channels has been once again underlined.
