The protest came after a 17-year-old was killed in a road rage incident involving people from two different communities. The murder which took place under the limits of Subhash Chowk police station sparked communal tension in the pink city.
Despite Jaipur Police’s claim that it was a misunderstanding between the parties, angry protestors gathered and tried to block roads. Communal tensions had also culminated in minor scuffles which prompted the deployment of additional police personnel in the city.
“Two motorcycles had collided and (one of the) two persons, who had stopped to see it, was assaulted by the locals. There was no motive, it was just some misunderstanding,” said Biju George Joseph, Jaipur Police Commissioner.
What happened on Friday
A collision between two bikers near Mehra Colony escalated into a physical altercation. Following the intervention of the colony’s residents, an attempt was made to defuse the situation as they urged both the bikers to go on their ways.
Tragically, the situation took a dark turn after one of the bikers complied with the residents’ request and left. The remaining biker engaged in a verbal dispute with a resident of the colony. Tensions heightened as the confrontation escalated into a physical attack, leading to the man’s immediate death.
The deceased, identified as Iqbal, a resident of Jaisinghpura, was reportedly claimed to have been killed after being struck by a vehicle, as per a report by India Today. Despite the circumstances, Iqbal’s family declined consent for a post-mortem examination.
The incident, captured in a viral video on social media, showed a member of the crowd slapping Iqbal, while another was seen dragging him.
