Nagpur : A petition was submitted by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti to various MLAs demanding that religious places should be freed from the sale of alcohol and meat. Mr Sunil Ghanwat (Maharashtra State Organizer of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti) submitted these petitions to Shiv Sena MLAs Chimanrao Patil and Balaji Kinikar, Mahesh Landge (BJP MLA from Pune), Mangesh Chavan (BJP MLA from Chalisgaon, Jalgaon district). All the MLAs promised to raise this issue in the House.
The petition states that beer bars, dance bars, ‘mutton shops’ are being opened on a large scale in many pilgrimage centres across the state in the name of ‘tourism’. Devotees must be provided with comforts and conveniences at places of pilgrimage; but the sanctity of holy places should also be preserved. Therefore, pilgrim places should be freed from the sale of alcohol and meat.
