Prayer to ‘Dhvaj (flag)’ :
यज्ञध्वज नमस्तुभ्यं धर्मध्वज नमोऽस्तु ते ।
तालध्वज नमस्तेऽस्तु नमस्ते गरुडध्वज ॥
-Waman-purana, Chapter 87, Verse 4
Meaning: O flag of Yadnya, O ‘Dharma-dhvaj’, I bow before you; O ‘Taal-dhvaja’, O ‘Garud-Dhvaja’ I offer obeisance to you. Future Hindu Rashtra, run by ‘sattvik’ people for welfare of the world, will be based on Dharma (Righteousness); therefore, there will be ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ in Hindu Rashtra and no ‘Rashtra-Dhvaj (national flag)’. Hindu Rashtra will be based on the principles of ‘Dharma, Artha, Kaam and Moksha’ and ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ will give inspiration to achieve these principles. ‘Rashtra-Dhvaj’ can only awaken patriotism; ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ gives inspiration for righteous State; but nobody prays to ‘Rashtra-Dhvaj’. In Hindu Rashtra, therefore, ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ will be ‘Rashtra-Dhvaj’ too. Information about ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ has been given in this article which will help to create ‘bhava’ (spiritual emotion) in you towards ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’.
1. Types of ‘Dhvaj’ – ‘Pataakaa’ and ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’
Two types of ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ are found in Hindu Dharma. As per science, flag with just one end is called ‘Pataakaa’ and it is a symbol of victory. It is used during war. On the chariot used in war, such flag with one–end, is flown. One perceives power by looking at such saffron one-end flag. A flag with two-ends is known as ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’. As a symbol of Hindu Dharma, this ‘Dhvaj’ is flown on temples during religious festivals. One perceives ‘bhaava (spiritual emotion) and bliss by looking at such two-ended saffron flag. Therefore, two-ended flag will be appropriate as ‘Dharma-Dhvaj’ for Hindu Rashtra.
2. Different ‘Dhvaj’ for Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) as per their activities
Sanatan Sanstha is engaged in activities related to ‘Dharmajagruti’ and ‘Dharma-prasar’; therefore, it should take two-ended Dhvaj. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti’s mission is protection of Dharma. Various drives undertaken for protection of Dharma are related to victory; therefore, one-ended ‘Dhvaj’ may be taken for HJS.
