Thiruvananthpuram (Kerala) : Police on Monday arrested eight fanatics on charges of gang-raping two young women after holding them captive for six days.

The arrested are third accused Midhun (20), fourth accused Thanseen (18), fifth accused Sammin (34), seventh accused Ahamed (20), tenth accused Shafeeq (24), eleventh accused Ashiq (24), twelfth accused Ibrahim (23) and thirteenth accused Sajeer (24), all residents of Melevettoor near Varkala.

Varkala circle inspector R Vinod Kumar said the accused were arrested from their houses. "Though the women did not know them, they remembered their names as all of them allegedly raped them several times in the six days," he said.

The accused were zeroed in after an investigation of friends of the main accused, who also bore the names listed by the women. However, around five more accused were still at large, Vinod Kumar said.

The survivors said in their statement to police that the main accused, an autorickshaw driver, was in love with the 17-year-old girl and he had taken her along with the 24-year-old relative to a house at Vettoor on the pretext of wanting to chat with her. He then locked them up and summoned his friends and gang-raped them. The abduction took place on August 9. The women escaped on August 15 and lodged a police complaint.

The CI said the family of the women believed that either women was at the other's house and hence did not bother to inquire as it was normal for them to live at each other's places.

All the accused were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
