Bangladesh : Hindu community demands 3-day Durga Puja holiday

Members of the Hindu community at a human chain in Dhaka on Friday demanded a three-day government holiday during their biggest festival Durga Puja and at least 60 reserved seats in parliament for them.

Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajote organised the programme in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mohajote leaders called for building a secular country in true sense and restoring rights of the minority community.

Meanwhile, the biannual conference of the city unit of Puja Udjapan Parishad was also held at a community centre.

Freedom fighter Captain (retd) Shachin Karmakar, also PUB central leader, inaugurated the conference which was addressed by Hirendra Samajdar, Rakhal Chandra Dey, Manabendra Batobayal and Suranjit Datta.

At the conference, the parishad leaders demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits who are creating communal conflict and called for a unity among the progressive forces to resist communalism.

They also announced to observe upcoming Durga-Puja festival in a more spectacular manner creating best example of communal harmony in the country.
