New Delhi: Banning of coconut at Mumbai’s Siddhivinayak Temple is creating a ripple effect. The popular Kalkaji Temple in the Capital is all set to impose a ban on coconut besides intensifying security measures. Sai Baba and Jhandewalan Temples’ management have already banned coconut in the sanctum sanctorum. At the famous Hanuman Temple located at Connaught Place sale of coconuts have come down as the temple committee has requested devotees not to offer coconut. "Places of worship are vulnerable because trouble at such sites will have a ripple effect. After the ban of certain offerings in Siddhivinayak Temple of Mumbai, we have also decided to review the security at Kalkaji Temple. In the next couple days, we are going to meet DCP south district and will discuss about the various security measures to be taken," said Satish Bhardwaj, secretary of Kalkaji Temple committee. However, according to another member of the committee, the Pujaris do not want to impose a ban on coconuts. "Our priority is the security of the devotees, and if police want to ban coconuts we will do that," added Bhardwaj.
At Sai Baba Temple at Lodhi Road, the security ring is quite palpable and the management is thinking of further intensifying it. "We are going to take a few more precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident," said staff of Sai Baba Temple. In Sai Baba Temple coconuts have been banned since the Sarojini Nagar blast in 2005. At the Jhandewalan Temple, coconuts have been banned for the past few years. "Devotees buy coconuts but they are not allowed to carry it inside the premises. The coconut is collected from them at the gates of the temple," said a committee member. Meanwhile, people feel such efforts would only reinforce people’s belief in the security measures. "Somebody determined to carry out a terror attack like in Akshardham cannot be stopped. But preventive measures must be taken. Their absence would only tempt mischief makers," said Ram Avtar, a retired Government official.
(This is of grave concern for Hindus.Temples are a very important part of Hindu Dharma.Today Hindus are deprived from taking the full benefit of their temple visit by imposing restrictions on security grounds. This is an indirect assault on the constitutional right of religious freedom of Hindus due to incompetency of government to deal with terrorist problem.Tomorrow on security grounds Hindus will be banned from entering temples. Then where Hindus will go? Hindus realise the seriousness of this and protest before it is too late -Editor)
