Panaji (Goa) – ‘Gou-vansh Raksha Abhiyan’ demanded through a representation submitted to Ms. Mrudula Sinha, the Governor of Goa that in the land of Goa, the sacred land of Sage Parshuram, cows and cattle should not be slaughtered during the period of Bakri Eid. ‘Gou-rakshaks’ met the Governor at Raj Bhavan at Dona Paula and submitted such representation.

Shri. Hanumant Parab of ‘Gou-vansh Raksha Abhiyan’, Shri. Kamalesh Bandekar, In-charge of ‘Bharat Swabhiman’ for Goa State, Shri. Sudesh Naik of ‘Padmanabh Shishya Sampradaya’, Shri. Om Dwiwedi representing Rajasthani community, Shri. Lakshman Joshi of ‘Gayatri Parivar’, Shri. Amrut Singh of ‘Animal Rescue Squad’, Dr. Manoj Solanki, Coordinator of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti for Goa, Shri. Eknath Naik, zonal-minister of VHP, Dr. Asif Ali, President of ‘Muslim Rashtreeya Manch’ for Goa, Shri. Gaurav Yadav of ‘Gou-Gyan Foundation’, Smt. Shantabai Manerikar of ISKCON, Shri. Abhijeet Naik of ‘Akhil Bharateeya Brahmin Sangh’, Shri. Sandip Sutar and Anuradha Modi of ‘Rajiv Dixit Vichar Manch’ and devout Hindus like Shri. Bhagavan Harmalkar etc. were present when the representation was handed over to the Governor.

Mumbai High Court has recently granted permission to Muslims for slaughtering cow/ cattle which are above 12 years at ‘Goa meat project’. This decision was not however, acceptable to ‘Gou-rakshaks’ and they met the Governor in this connection. The demands made through representation are as given below.

1. Protection should be provided to ‘Gou-rakshaks’ who will be working for prevention of illegal slaughtering of cows/ cattle during the period of Bakri Eid, on 5th and 6th October and order should be issued to police and all concerned administrative machinery to cooperate with ‘Gou-rakshaks’ in preventing cow-slaughter.

2. Government officers and ‘Gou-rakshak’ voluntary organizations may form action-group especially at Valpai, Dicholi, Vasco and Margao during Bakri Eid period where illegal slaughtering of cows/ cattle takes place. Ban should be imposed upon sale of cows/ cattle during Bakri Eid so also on their transport and export.

3. In every Taluka, ‘Gou-shala’ should be set up with the help of ‘Gou-rakshaks’ for protection of cows/ cattle who would be released by ‘Gou-rakshaks’.

It has been further stated in the representation that ‘Gou-mata’ is revered by Hindus. Its protection is necessary considering its use in agriculture, health, medicines and economy. There is clear mention of prevention of cow-slaughter under article 48 of Indian Constitution. Unfortunately, ‘gou-mata’ is being sacrificed for politics of appeasement of minorities. Cow is considered to be auspicious by Hindus, Sikhs, Jain, Buddhists, followers of ‘Arya Samaj’ and ‘Vedic Sanatan Dharma’; still cows are slaughtered in this country by trampling sentiments of majority population. This chain of cow-slaughter is increasing day by day resulting in the poor being deprived of milk. The Central Government had approved grant of Rs. 1 crore for animal husbandry for Goa during the year 2013 and Rs. 2 crores for the year 2014. This fund has not been utilized by the Government. In a case of 2005 betweeb Gujarat State Vs. Moti Qureshi butcher, the Supreme Court has passed a verdict that a bull can be used for earning income till 16 years of its age and cannot be slaughtered. There is ban on cow-slaughter even in States like Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgad, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Gujarat etc; but in Goa, ban has not yet been imposed on cow/ cattle –slaughter. Fanatics are taking advantage of this and hurting sentiments of Hindus; besides, the Government machinery has been overlooking illegal slaughtering of animals, transport and smuggling.
