New Delhi (India) : The rift between the Modi government and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad is now out in the open. Senior VHP member Pravin Togadia lashed out at Narendra Modi on Sunday saying, the VHP might not support Modi in the forthcoming assembly polls in November.
Togadia said the BJP in Gujarat has moved away from the Hindu ideology and Hindus in the state, especially women don’t feel safe anymore.
The VHP has been alienating itself from Modi since the party’s resounding victory in the 2002 Assembly elections.
Togadia said: "No one should consider himself the most powerful person and ruling over the hearts of the people."
Claiming that the VHP support was crucial for the BJP to win elections, Dr. Togadia said the BJP had won the last elections owing to the support of the VHP and Sangh Parivar.
Coming close on the heels of the heightened dissident activity, the decision of the VHP, though on expected lines, will add to the problems of the BJP and Mr. Modi. With their ranks continuing to swell, the VHP move will further encourage the dissidents to throw challenges to the Chief Minister openly.
The VHP is angry at Modi’s one-upmanship after he came to power in the state.
They feel Modi gave them a cold shoulder after using VHP’s network for campaigning. The VHP had supported BJP in the 2002 Assembly elections fought in the wake of the post-Godhra communal riots. The BJP won with a thumping majority.
