Jalgaon (Maharashtra): The ‘Dal Parivar’ an organisation of the industrial community had organised a fancy dress competition on the occasion of Shravani Somvar (Mondays in the holy month of Shravan) at the Omkareshvar temple in Jalgaon. Children were to contest in the garb of Lord Shiva. When this was brought to the notice of the HJS to stop this denigration of Lord Shiva a delegation of the HJS met the trustees of the Omkareshvar temple and the organisers of the contest and made them aware of how if children dressed in jeans and goggles and posed as Lord Shiva it would amount to denigration of Lord Shiva. Shri Joshi, trustee of the temple and members of the ‘Dal Parivar’ after a patient hearing cancelled the contest.
The festoons put up in the temple also had pictures of a dancing Lord Shiva. When these festoons fell on the ground they were trampled upon by thousands of devotees visiting the famous Omkareshvar temple on the occasion of Shravani Somvar .
(To give spiritual benefits to society the organisers would have done better by organising chanting sessions, bhajan programmes, narration of the glory of God, etc. Participants too would benefit from this spiritually. What spiritual benefit does a fancy dress competition endow ? Such programmes on the contrary are causing further deterioration in the Hindu religion. Also why should a deity shower its grace upon someone who tramples upon its picture ? – Editor)
